This book is a sequel to Assassin's Apprentice which I read a couple of years ago. In spite of my searing disappointment with the ending of Hobb's Tawny Man Trilogy, I decided to give her Soldier Son Trilogy a try. Robin Hobb, you had a good thing going with The Farseer Trilogy and The Tawny Man Trilogy, but you appeared to be in such a hurry to finish the latter that you tacked on a false happy ending and made me want to cry. The world building Assassin's Apprentice launches the Farseer Trilogy, one of four trilogies in the Realm of the Elderlings. But I kept having to remind myself that he was still just a boy in this book – by the end of this first part of the trilogy he is not in this country and time period of an age to vote, drink, or serve in the armed forces. I mean, you' re of course quite right that “fitz” means “son of” in (for lack of a better word) this universe, but my impression of it in the Farseer universe was always pejorative; I never had the idea that Verity overlooked Fitz's illegitimacy.
